Youth, Adult & Senior Programs

The Apex Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources provides a variety of year-round programming for all ages and interests. Programs include Youth Athletics, Adult Athletics, Instructional Programs, Special Events and programs for area Keenagers (over age 55).

Park Facilities

The Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department oversees 9 town owned parks ranging in size from the 160-acre Apex Community Park, to the 20 acre Jaycee Park, to several 1 to 2 acre parks located throughout town. Apex Community Park includes several playing fields, tennis courts, a playground and a 2-mile walking/running hard surface trail surrounding the lake.

With the passing of a $13 million Park Bond in 2004, the Town recently began retrofitting the majority of its public greenway system, and continues to work on a 160 Nature and Environmental Education Park, slated to begin construction in 2008. The town is currently planning for its first athletic complex with construction scheduled to begin sometime after 2008. Additional greenway improvements are also scheduled for 2008 and 2010.

Apex Community Center

As a result of the 2004 Park Bond, the renovation / expansion of this facility is currently underway. At the conclusion of construction, slated for summer of 2006, the existing facility will almost double in size. The expansion will include the enlargement of the existing Arts/Crafts room, the addition of another full-size gymnasium, expanded storage, and the relocation of all existing administrative and athletic staff to the new facility.

Performing and Cultural Arts Center

As a result of the Park Bond of 2004 and significant grant funding from Wake County and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Town is actively pursuing the renovation of the Towns original Town Hall, built in 1912, into a Cultural and Performing Arts Center that would significantly expand the cultural and performing arts opportunities available to the citizens of Apex and the surrounding area. This project, estimated at 1.2 million will transform the existing building into a two story facility to accommodate gallery space, meeting space at street level, and a small performing area on the second floor.

Currently, this project is scheduled to begin sometime during the summer of 2006 with a tentative opening date sometime in 2007.

Special Events

The Apex Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources sponsors and co-sponsors a wide variety of special events. Highlights include the Turkey Trot Road Race, Family Basketball, Turkey Shoot, Outdoor Concerts, Spring Youth Fishing Derby, Halloween Carnival, the Olde Fashioned 4th of July Celebration, and much more. In conjunction with the Apex Festival Commission, the Town co-sponsors the Annual Peak Festival.
